Can restrictions on freedom of speech ever be justified?
英検1級 2017年度・第1回ライティング問題より
I do not think restrictions on freedom of speech can ever be justified. I have three reasons to support my view.
The first reason is that if freedom of speech was restricted by law, the people in power, like politicians or the police, can easily conceal information that they do not want to reveal. For example, the Japanese government did not reveal the truth about World War II by restricting freedom of speech about the situation. So many Japanese people were misinformed about it.
The second reason is that people should only judge things after being properly informed. To do so, the internet is useful in sharing information. Some people say that information on the internet cannot be trusted because you do not know who exactly wrote it, but there are some advantages as well. Anyone can share their own opinions freely, so there is a high chance to discover the truth. Authorities cannot misuse their power if there is freedom of speech.
The third reason is that people should be given a chance to learn about everything they are interested in. People should understand the differing opinions and decide which one they want to accept.
For these reasons, I believe that restrictions on freedom of speech cannot be justified. (210 words)

言論の自由の制限を正当化できるとは思いません。私の見解を支持する理由は3つあります。
第一の理由は、言論の自由が法律で制限されている場合、政治家や警察などの権力者は、明らかにしたくない情報を簡単に隠すことができるからです。たとえば、日本政府は、状況についての言論の自由を制限することによって、第二次世界大戦についての真実を明らかにしませんでした。非常に多くの日本人がそれについて誤解していました。
第二の理由は、人々は適切な情報を得た後にのみ物事を判断すべきであるということです。そうするために、インターネットは情報を共有するのに役立ちます。インターネット上の情報は、誰が正確に書いたのかわからないため信頼できないと言う人もいますが、いくつかの利点もあります。誰でも自由に意見を共有できるので、真実を発見する可能性が高いです。言論の自由があれば、当局は自分たちの力を悪用することはできません。
第三の理由は、人々が興味のあることすべてについて学ぶ機会を与えられるべきであるということです。人々は異なる意見を理解し、どちらを受け入れたいかを決める必要があります。
これらの理由から、言論の自由の制限は正当化できないと私は思います。
